Write a letter to a national newspaper in support of Alex Sodiqov

This is a resource to be used in the campaign to free Alex Sodiqov from detention in Tajikistan

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Sir,

The case of the detention of Mr Alexander Sodiqov demonstrates the deteriorating environment for academic research across much of the world and especially in the Central Asian republic of Tajikistan.

Alex’s research with colleagues at the universities of Exeter and Newcastle explores the politics of conflict management in Badakhshon, Tajikistan, since violence there in 2012.  On 16 June he was arrested and accused of espionage and high treason.  He remains in custody despite no evidence being found to justify the ridiculous accusations.

We are gravely worried about Alex’s continued detention and his welfare.

With the visit of Tajikistan Foreign Minister to the UK this week, we ask Foreign Secretary William Hague to demand fair treatment for and the ultimate release of Alex.  Moreover, future UK support for the regime’s hydro-electric dam and electricity export projects, must be made conditional on Tajikistan’s provision of basic freedoms of speech, association and academic research.

Yours,
