Who, Why and How exiled:

Akbarali Abdullaev is a nephew of Karimov’s widow, Tatyana Karimova. He is  is wanted by Tashkent for alleged forgery and embezzlement of hundreds of millions of dollars (Radio Free Europe, 2017).

Stage 1 details (accusations/ charges/ Interpol notice/ extradition requests):

Abdullaev was charged in Tashkent with embezzlement and financial fraud in 2013 (Radio Free Europe, 2017). In 2013,  the prosecutor's office instituted criminal proceedings under articles 164 ("Stealing by misappropriation or embezzlement"), 184 ("Evasion from payment of taxes or other mandatory payments") and 210 ("Taking bribes" ) of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan. Following this,  the entire leadership of the Fergana oil refinery was arrested, of which  70 percent of activities was controlled by Abdullayev (Radio Free Europe, 2017)

He was placed on an Interpol Red notice (Radio Free Europe, 2017).

Stage 2 details (arrest/ detention/ extradition):

Abdullaev was detained at Kyiv's Zhulyany International Airport in January 2017 where he arrived with Uzbek and Dominican passports (Radio Free Europe, 2017). He was later sent to one-month pretrial detention, which expired on February 22, 2017 (Radio Free Europe, 2017). In 2017 a court in Kyiv has prolonged it by one year (Radio Free Europe, 2017).

On 21 April 2017 Abdullaev was moved to house arrest in Kyiv while his extradition request was still pending. (RFE/RL, April 2017) Later that year, on 14 June 2017 he was released from house arrest and offered refugee status in Ukraine (RFE/RL, June 2017).
