Annakurbanov, Yevshan
Who, Why and How exiled: As a Turkmen journalist he participated in an anti-government demonstration in Ashgabat on July 12, 1995. He was also the author of a number of literary materials, and worked for the Turkmen studio of the radio station "Svoboda" ("Azatlyk") in 1996-1998 (Memorial, n.d).
Stage 2 details (arrest/ detention/ extradition): The journalist was detained by the police in the Ashgabat airport, where he was going to fly to Prague to participate in a seminar organised by Radio Freedom Europe/Radio Liberty (Amnesty International, 1998). After the arrest, the police said that Annakurbanov had found a disk with the material of the Turkmen opposition parties ( RFE/RL, 1997).
Other actions during Stages 1–3 (dispossession/ overseas assets frozen/ intimidation/ action against associates/ …): He was tortured in prison (Memorial, n.d.).
Current status: He was released from prion in 1997, on the eve of the visitby the Minister of Energy of the USA Federico Peña to Turkmenistan (RFE/RL, 1997). He fled to Norway after his release (Memoria, n.d.).
