Who, Why and How exiled:

In 2016 Buriev had to leave his native republic Tajikistan to Russia, fleeing from the persecution of the authorities for him supporting Group 24 (Novaya Gazeta, 2018).

It is known that Dalerdzhon Buriev supports the Tajik social and political movement "Group 24" - an association that stands for democratic changes in the country. The Tajik government is pursuing supporters of the movement (Novaya Gazeta, 2018).

Stage 1 details (accusations/ charges/ Interpol notice/ extradition requests):

Buriev was detained on the street in Yekaterinburg by the police checking his documents. It turned out that in his homeland, Buriev was wanted on suspicion of religious extremism, which he himself had no idea about (Novaya Gazeta, 2018).

Stage 2 details (arrest/ detention/ extradition):

In September 2018 he was released from the detention centre in Yekaterinburg however very shortly after his release he was  seized by police officers and taken to the Temporary Detention Center (Novaya Gazeta, 2018).

 

 

Stage 3 details (attack/ abduction/ rendition/ torture/ assassination/ death):

On  September 11, 2018, Buriev was suddenly released from the SIZO, and he disappeared. As it became known later, at the exit of the pre-trial detention center, Buriev was seized by police officers and taken to the Temporary Detention Center. Several hours later he was sent to the airport, and from there, on the night of September 12/13 2018, was deported to Tajikistan by direct flight, where Buriev was immediately arrested by the Tajik special services.

Buriev's lawyers had appealed to the ECHR who on September 11, 2018 applied Rule 39 of its regulation - a categorical ban on the forcible return of a person to his homeland, where he may be tortured by the authorities (Novaya Gazeta, 2018).

Immediately after being detained in Yekaterinburg, Buriev appealed to the Russian authorities for asylum, setting out his story in detail, but was denied (Novaya Gazeta, 2018).
