Iklymov, Saparmurat
Who, Why and How exiled: Former Deputy Minister for agriculture. Whilst living in Sweden in 2002, he was accused of being the mastermind in an assassination attempt on Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov.
Stage 1 details (accusations/ charges/ Interpol notice/ extradition requests): Following the assassination attempt, the Turkmen authorities began to take family members of Iklymov into custody and question them (FCO, 2003: 28; RFE/RL, 2002).
Stage 2 details (arrest/ detention/ extradition): Iklymov was sentenced to imprisonment in absentia (RFE/RL, 2002; Fergana News, 2007).
Current status: In Sweden (RFE/RL, 2002).
