He has been detained in Russia with other 4 young activists (Sohibnazar Abdunazarov, Abdurahim Vosiev, Mekhrubon Sattorov, Firuzsho Loikov, and Tagoymurod Mahmadiev) of the "Group of 24"  at the request of the Tajik authorities (Novaya Gazeta, 2016).

It has been reported that The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) is preparing to deport Ismoil Kholov to Tajikistan in compliance with an international arrest warrant. Still presumed to be detained in Russia as of August 2019 (Fergana, 2019)
