Who, Why and How exiled:

A member of Group 24, after receiving threats towards his family he returned to Tajikistan on 9 October 2014 and was arrested at the airport in Dushanbe (TajInfo, 2015).

Kurbonov had been charged with anti-constitutional activity (article 307) of the Criminal Code of Tajikistan (Human Rights Watch,  2016).

Family received threats, prompting Kurbonov's return (TajInfo,  2015; Sputnik, 2015).

Stage 3 details (attack/ abduction/ rendition/ torture/ assassination/ death):

Kurbonov's collegues claim that he disappeared after returning to Tajikistan from Russia on or around 10th October 2014. Activists believe that he was forcibly disappeared by Tajik authorities and may be in a detention facility, although his whereabouts remain unknown (Human Rights Watch, 2016).

Current status:

Kurbonov is serving four year sentence in prison in Tajikistan, though there is no record of a trial taking place. Whereabouts remain unknown (TajInfo, 2015; Human Rights Watch, 2016; Atayeva, 2015).

His whereabouts still remain unknown in 2019. Human Rights Watch have urged the United Nations Human Rights Committee (OHCHR) to pressure the government of Tajikistan to reveal Nematullo Kurbonov's location and release him (HRW, 2019).
