Who, Why and How exiled: Former district mayor of Kizel-Arbat and deputy of parliament. Escaped the country, fearing detention (Eurasianet, 2002; Radio Freedom Europe, 2007).
Stage 1 details (accusations/ charges/ Interpol notice/ extradition requests): On November 2, 2001, the Turkmenistani authorities brought criminal charges of embezzlement and unlawful arms sales against the former foreign minister (Eurasianet, 2002).
Stage 3 details (attack/ abduction/ rendition/ torture/ assassination/ death): Physically attacked whilst in Turkmenistan. Physically attacked in Moscow during late 1990s, whilst waiting for asylum request.
Other actions during Stages 1–3 (dispossession/ overseas assets frozen/ intimidation/ action against associates/ …): Confiscated property (Euasianet, 2002).
Legal status (refugee/ asylum seeker/ resident): Received asylum status in Sweden (Eurasianet, 2002).
Current status: Resides in Sweden, has asylum status. Faces detention if returns to Turkmenistan.
