Who, Why and How exiled:

Tanrykuliev was a former opposition Member of Parliament in Turkmenistan who was jailed in 1999 for open criticism of the government (Human Rights Watch, 2016). In 2000, he was released and fled to Norway (Human Rights Watch, 2016).

Soon after Tanrykuliev’s arrest his daughter and son-in-law were dismissed from work and subject to interrogation and intimidation as well as banned from leaving the country (Human Rights Watch, 2016). Other members of Tanrykuliev’s family were also prohibited from leaving the country including his wife and two daughters, and his brother (Human Rights Watch, 2016). In 2016 the travel ban against Tanrykuliev’s wife and daughters was lifted (Human Rights Watch, 2016).
