Salimov,Yaqub
Who, Why and How exiled: Salimov was once one of Tajikistan's most powerful officials and a key figure in the 1992-97 civil war. During the 1992-97 civil war, Salimov alternately served as Tajikistan's interior minister, ambassador to Turkey, and customs committee chairman. He was also a member of Popular Front, a paramilitary group that fought on the government side during the civil war (Fergana News, 2016).
Stage 1 details (accusations/ charges/ Interpol notice/ extradition requests): In 2005, Tajikistan’s Supreme Court found Salimov guilty of treason, banditry, and abuse of office (Radio Free Europe, 2005).
Stage 2 details (arrest/ detention/ extradition): He was detained six years in Moscow on a warrant issued by Dushanbe (Radio Free Europe, 2003).
Stage 3 details (attack/ abduction/ rendition/ torture/ assassination/ death): He was handed over to Tajik authorities in 2005 and was imprisoned for 15 years. Later his time in prison was decided to be shortened (Radio Free Europe, 2005; Fergana News, 2016).
Current status: Imprisoned.
