Tunghyshbaev, Muratbek
Who, Why and How exiled: Muratbek Tunghyshbaevis an Kazakh opposition activist and blogger.Tunghyshbaev co-founded the human rights group Liberty in 2011. The group has worked on freedom of assembly, anti-discrimination, and other human rights issues. He fled Kazakhstan in 2012 after security services summoned him for reporting on an oil-worker strike and an outbreak of violence in the town of Zhanaozen in 2011 ( RFE/RL, 2018).
Stage 1 details (accusations/ charges/ Interpol notice/ extradition requests): Kazakh authorities charged him on financially supporting and and taking in the activities of an extremist group. The authorities are targeting him over videos he posted online about problems faced by activists and supporters of the opposition Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan (DVK) movement ( RFE/RL, 2018).
Stage 2 details (arrest/ detention/ extradition): Tunghyshbaev was arrested in Bishkek in May 2018 at the request of authorities in Kazakhstan who claim that the activist financially supported and took part in the activities of an extremist group ( RFE, RL, 2018).
Stage 3 details (attack/ abduction/ rendition/ torture/ assassination/ death): In 2018, Kyrgyz authorities have extradited him to Kazakhstan ( RFE, RL, 2018).
Legal status (refugee/ asylum seeker/ resident): He applied for asylum in Kyrgyzstan in 2018 ( RFE/RL, 2018)
Current status: He has been extradited to Kazakhstan ( RFE/RL, 2018).
