In 2004 his colleagues, Mamur Atayev, Seiran Mamedov, and Davlet Niyazdurdyev, were taken into custody. Upon hearing of their arrest, Belyalov fled Turkmenistan, whilst the authorities began to arrest a number of his students (Fergana News, 2004).
